The Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering tackles contemporary and emerging challenges for the built and natural environment, ranging from resource utilisation, pollution and climate change to digitalisation and inequality. Sound and vibration are part of our daily lives. The Division of Applied Acoustics conducts research in audio and acoustics and aims to contribute to sustainable built environments and sustainable infrastructure, as well as to support European industry in the development of products and services with appropriate sound and vibration properties.
About the research project
The position is part of collaboration project with Reality Labs, which is a US-based research unit of Meta Platforms, Inc., the owner of Facebook and WhatsApp. The collaboration aims at creating and evaluating signal processing methods for noise suppression in and enhancement of microphone array signals. Who we are looking for
The following requirements are mandatory:
- To qualify as a Doctoral student, you must have a Master’s degree of 120 credits or a Master’s degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits* in of 120 credits in electrical engineering, acoustics, mathematics, data science or related field.
- Experience in digital audio signal processing and acoustic measurements
- Experience in machine learning
- Experience in either MATLAB or Python programming
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
*for students with an education earned outside of Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted.
The following experience will strengthen your application:
- Experience in psychoacoustic experiments
- Experience in a version control system such as Git
- Experience in writing scientific texts in LaTeX
What you will do
- Conduct research and publish the results internationally
- Develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing
- Take courses at an advanced level within the Graduate school of Applied Acoustics
- The position generally also includes teaching in Chalmers’ MSc Programme Sound and Vibration or other duties corresponding to 20 percent of working hours. The teaching will be carried out in the English language.
Contract terms
- The Doctoral student positions are fully funded from start.
- The position is a fixed-term appointment of four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20%, which extends the position up to five years.
- A starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (valid from May 25, 2025).
- Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the entire study period. A valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date; otherwise the admission may be withdrawn.
