Job Description

We are now seeking an assistant, associate or full professor in the broad field of Wireless Systems including both wireless connectivity as well as different flavors of wireless situational awareness (positioning, sensing, and radar technologies). The position is placed in the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences at Tampere University in the Unit of Electrical Engineering (EE). The EE Unit is a hub of expertise with roughly 200 faculty and staff members, of which 15 professors and 7 tenure track professors. We confer about 80-100 master’s degrees and 12-15 doctoral degrees annually. Our teaching and research activities are based on a profound understanding of electrical and electromagnetic phenomena and their modelling and applications. We work in close collaboration with several industrial partners and maintain an active presence in the international scientific community. We also offer an excellent research infrastructure with state-of-the-art laboratories. The new position is located within the Communications Engineering and Radio Systems research area.
The position expands the current research to create new technology, scientific openings, and innovations in the broad field of wireless systems and the related technology. We particularly search candidates for the following two broad topics and working profiles on the field:

Wireless connectivity and networking. This topic area covers the techniques and methods for wireless data communications, and the related modulation and coding schemes, signal processing algorithms, networking protocols, and systems engineering.
Wireless situational awareness, covering positioning, sensing and radar technologies. This topic area covers techniques, methods, concepts, algorithms and systems research for wireless positioning, sensing and radar technologies.

A successful candidate may focus on one of these topic areas, and some of the corresponding underlying theme, or alternatively pursue research successfully in both broad topics and their intersections. The final profile of the position can be tailored according to your specific expertise and research interests.

In general, our tenure track staff are expected to:

- pursue and supervise scientific research in the field,
- lead, conduct and develop research-led teaching, curriculum development and student supervision
- seek, secure and manage research funding from different sources e.g. EU instruments
- demonstrate effective academic leadership and engage with external stakeholders

Initial appointment as an assistant professor and associate professor will be for five years. Subject to successful performance, you will become a tenured faculty member at the end of the first five-year period. You will be well supported throughout the five-year period to ease your transition to a tenured position. Full professors will hold a permanent appointment from the outset. Salaries are based on the job demands and employees’ personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. Typical starting salary range will be from €4,200 to €4,900/month for an assistant professor and from €4,900 to €5,700/month for an associate professor and from 5,900-6,900 EUR/month for a professor. A higher salary may also be agreed upon based on the successful candidate’s experience and/or performance.
