Job Description

Ultrasonic and Terahertz (2D/3D) imaging is a promising subsurface sensing and imaging methodology with applications in medicine, non-invasive, non-destructing inspection including chemical substance characterization exploiting wavelength dependent signatures of different materials. In this project we aim to exploit the expertise in our network on compressive sensing and Ultrasonic/Terahertz sensing hardware design to develop innovative new sensing and imaging methodologies.

The successful candidate will be employed for a maximum period of three years full-time equivalent and receives a generous financial package plus an additional mobility and family allowance according to the rules for Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) in an EU Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions Innovative Training Networks (ITN). A career development plan will be prepared for each fellow in accordance with his/her supervisor and will include training, planned secondments and outreach activities in partner institutions of the network. The ESR fellows are supposed to complete their PhD thesis by the end of the 3rd year of their employment. For more information please visit the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions Innovative Training Networks website.

YOUR TASKS
New sparsity-driven image formation methods for Ultrasonic and Terahertz imaging.

Compressive sensing information flow and integration methodologies for novel Ultrasonic or Terahertz sensors and systems.

Machine learning methods including dictionary learning in compressive Ultrasonic/Terahertz imaging.

PROFILE
Master of Science in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Physics, Industrial Engineering, Information Technologies or related fields.

ESRs must demonstrate that their ability to understand and express themselves in both written and spoken English is sufficiently high for them to derive the full benefit from the network training. Non-native English speakers are required to provide evidence of English language competency. (TOEFL … )

PLANNED SECONDMENTS
USI (ZESS), Siegen, Germany, and AMO GmbH, Aachen, Germany, 8 months, supervisors: Prof. Dr. O. Loffeld, Prof. Dr. Peter Haring Bolivar, Prof. Dr. M. Lemme with respect to Terahertz imaging and sensing including hardware design.

FHG (FHR), Wachtberg, Germany, 2 months, supervisor: Dr. S. Brüggenwirth, involving extending classical RF techniques and technologies into the Terahertz domain. USI’s involvement in this project will not just be limited to the secondment, but will continue throughout the project through remote collaboration. While USI (ZESS) approaches the problem using laser technologies, FHR’s approach is complementary. It will be very useful for the ESR to study this perspective as well through interaction with researchers at FHG (FHR).
