Job Description

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Electronic Systems, a position as postdoc in Robust audio compression and streaming of multi-channel audio for sound field control is open for appointment from February 1, 2020, or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is available for 36 months. The Department of Electronic Systems is one of the largest departments at Aalborg University with a total of more than 250 employees. The department is internationally recognized in particular for its contributions within Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The research and teaching of the Department of Electronic Systems focus on electronic engineering and the activity areas are organized in the sections: Antennas, Propagation and Millimetre-wave Systems section (APMS), Automation Control section (Control), Connectivity section (CNT), Signal and Information Processing section (SIP), Wireless Communication Networks section (WCN) and Communication, Media and Information technologies (CMI). The department focuses on maintaining a close interplay with the university’s surroundings - locally, nationally and internationally – as well as producing unique basic research and educating talented and creative engineers. The department collaborates with leading ICT researchers all over the world.

JOB DESCRIPTION
We seek to appoint a PostDoc to take part in research and knowledge exchange in the research project Interactive Sound Zones for Better Living (ISOBEL).

The aim of the ISOBEL project is to enable control of reproduced sound in domestic and health care environments. The approach is to reproduce specific audio content (e.g. music) in particular spatial regions of the room, so called sound zones. These sound zones are dynamic and interactive relative to the audio content and the requirements of the occupants of the zones. The sound zones are created using multiple synchronized wireless loudspeakers, which in unison create the desired sound field. The sound field is measured using microphones at given positions in the room and extrapolated to the regions of interest before being used for online adaptation of the control algorithm..

The main purpose of this postdoc project is to analyze and design new streaming strategies in order to achieve robust and synchronized streaming of audio to multiple loudspeakers in health care and domestic environments. The project involves designing new adaptive network codes for multicast and multi-hop networks that considers the dynamics of the communication environment, the audio signals, and the user requirements. A possible direction could be to design joint source-channel codes for multi-cast environments
