Job Description

In the Science, Engineering & Technology Group, Faculty of Engineering Science, Department of Electrical Engineering (ESAT) at KU Leuven there is a full-time academic vacancy. We are looking for internationally oriented candidates with an excellent research record and with educational competence within the field of Optimization for Dynamical Systems and Control.

The STADIUS Center for Dynamical Systems, Signal Processing and Data Analytics (www.esat.kuleuven.be/stadius/) is a research division of the Department of Electrical Engineering (ESAT) (www.esat.kuleuven.be) of KU Leuven (www.kuleuven.be) and comprises the research and educational activities of 12 professors and over 80 PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers.
STADIUS has an excellent research track record in linear and multi-linear algebra, dynamical system identification and control, signal processing and data mining, with many applications in industrial processes, biomedicine, telecommunication, etc. It is well funded through highly competitive channels, such as the European Research Council (ERC Advanced and Starting Grants), the KU Leuven Excellence Funding Programme (e.g. OPTEC, KU Leuven Center of Excellence in Optimization in Engineering, www.kuleuven.be/optec/), the Interuniversity Attraction Pole Programme (e.g. IUAP-DYSCO, Dynamical Systems, Control and Optimization, www.sites.uclouvain.be/dysco/), as well as other regional, national and European funding channels. In addition, STADIUS has an excellent track record in projects with industry, which has led to the founding of several spin-off companies (www.esat.kuleuven.be/stadius/spinoffs/php).
KU Leuven is a research intensive, internationally oriented university in the centre of Europe. It is a comprehensive university with many opportunities for multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research. Its technology transfer office Leuven Research and Development (www.kuleuven.be/lrd) serves as a role model for many European universities.

You will perform research in optimization for dynamical sytems and control with a focus on theory as well as applications. Research activities will include (large-scale) optimization algorithms design for problems in linear and nonlinear dynamical systems theory, modeling and system identification. As numerical optimization plays an increasingly important role in various disciplines, expertise in numerical optimization and numerical aspects of dynamical system theory, system identification and control system design, will be favorable. Experience obtained from industrial applications will also be advantageous.

You will subscribe to the international research strategy of STADIUS, expand on an excellent scientific track record and will play a pivotal role in the network of scientific and industrial collaborations in the aforementioned fields.

You will undertake teaching responsabilities in the bachelor and master programmes of the Faculty of Engineering Science, in particular in courses relevant and related to the research domain, such as optimization, dynamical systems, control theory, and numerical linear algebra.

You develop your teachings in accordance with KU Leuven's vision on activating and research-based education and make use of the possibilities for the educationalist professionalisation offered by the faculty and the university.

As the research division STADIUS has a long standing tradition in applied research projects with companies (including spin-off companies) and (inter)national research institutes, it is expected that you, through your entrepreneurial spirit, will contribute to this dimension of service to society.

Requirements:
- You have a PhD in Engineering or equivalent.
- You have a strong research profile. The quality of your research is proven by publications in prominent international journals. International research experience is an important advantage.
- You have demonstrable qualities related to academic education. Teaching experience is an advantage.
- You possess organisational skills and have a cooperative attitude. You also possess leadership capacities within a university context.
- An excellent command of English is required. KU Leuven provides courses in Academic English.

The official administrative language used at KU Leuven is Dutch. If you do not speak Dutch (or do not speak it well) at the start of employment, KU Leuven will provide language training to enable you to take part in meetings.

Before teaching courses in Dutch or English, you will be given the opportunity to learn Dutch resp. English to the required standard.

We are offering full-time employment in an intellectually challenging and interdisciplinary environment,.
KU Leuven is a research-intensive, internationally oriented university that carries out both fundamental and applied scientific research. It is highly inter- and multidisciplinary focused and strives for international excellence. In this regard, it actively works together with research partners in Belgium and abroad. It provides its students with an academic education that is based on high-quality scientific research.

You will work in Leuven, a historic, dynamic and lively city located in the heart of Belgium, within 20 minutes from Brussels, the capital of the European Union, and less than two hours from Paris, London and Amsterdam.

Depending on your record and qualifications, you will be appointed to or tenured in one of the grades of the senior academic staff: assistant professor, associate professor, professor or full professor. In principle, junior researchers are appointed as assistant professor on the tenure track for a period of 5 years; after this period and a positive evaluation, they are permanently appointed (or tenured) as an associate professor.
