Job Description

The Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) has a vacancy for a 100% position as a PhD Research fellow at the Department of Electronic Systems (IES) (http://www.ntnu.edu/ies).

The PhD position is for up to 4 years with 25% work assignments for NTNU IES.

Project description:
--------------------------

Big data analytics allows us to discover hidden connections between seemingly unrelated things. However, due to the sheer scale of big data, running machine-learning-based analytics on a single central processor is often impractical. In addition, in the emerging paradigm of internet of things (IoT), large quantities of data are constantly collected by numerous sensors, which are often geographically dispersed or, to make the matters even more challenging, mobile. This makes concentrating the data at a central processing hub unfeasible due to constraints on the energy budgets of the sensors as well as the capacity of the communication channels. Thus, distributed processing of data over networks of machines/agents is essential for performing big-data analytics in future IoT-based applications.

Successful decentralization of most machine-learning algorithms not only requires efficient distribution of the data processing across a network of machines but also needs careful distribution of the underpinning mathematical models over the network. This PhD project will be around developing and analyzing new machine-learning algorithms for big data analytics that can be fully distributed over networks and hence can capture the critical information offered by big data.

The PhD candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with research scientists from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) of Australia and visit the CSIRO site at Brisbane, Australia. Developed algorithms can be implemented and evaluated on the existing IoT platform at NTNU that is part of the NTNU Internet of Things Lab at IIK.

Qualifications:
-------------------

We seek a highly-motivated individual who has

- a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or other relevant disciplines
- strong mathematical background and a research-oriented master thesis in a related field, e.g., signal processing, statistical machine learning, applied mathematics, or optimization
- experience with programming

The successful candidate should be creative, independent, self-motivated, and have excellent verbal and written communication skills in English. Publication activities in the aforementioned disciplines will be considered an advantage but is not a requirement.

Applicants who do not master a Scandinavian language should provide evidence of good written and spoken English language skills. The following tests can be used as documentation: TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE), or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). Minimum scores are: TOEFL - 600 (paper-based test), 92 (Internet-based test); IELTS - 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted); CAE/CPE - grade B or A.
