Job Description

A postdoctoral research position is available in the KU Leuven Electrical Engineering Department (ESAT), in the frame of a research project on multimedia processing for video commerce applications. The research activities include the design and evaluation of audio and acoustic signal processing algorithms for the characterization of noise and reverberation using uncalibrated microphone arrays. An intensive collaboration will be pursued with other academic research groups (addressing video and audio analytics tasks) and with the start-up company that initiated the project. The research will be carried out in an international team of audio engineering researchers at the e-Media Lab and the Stadius Centre for Dynamical Systems, Signal Processing and Data Analytics. A one-year position is offered, with the possibility of extending the position with a second year.

RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT
The e-Media Lab and the Stadius Centre are part of the Electrical Engineering (ESAT) Department at KU Leuven and host over 100 researchers. The audio engineering group headed by Prof. Toon van Waterschoot is a subgroup affiliated to both labs, in which applied signal processing and machine learning research is carried out in the context of audio, speech, music, and acoustics applications. The audio engineering group currently hosts about 10 international PhD and postdoc researchers and participates in several nationally and internationally funded research projects, often in collaboration with industry.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The postdoctoral researcher will
- carry out research on the design, evaluation and implementation of signal processing algorithms for estimating noise and reverberation characteristics from uncalibrated microphone array signals;
- monitor the work plan of the research project and make sure that milestones are achieved and deliverables are finalized in a timely manner;
- actively participate in research and project management meetings with the industrial project partner;
- take part in the research meetings, seminars, etc. at the e-Media Lab and the Stadius Centre;
- assist in the supervision of MSc and PhD students;
- perform a limited amount of teaching activities (max. 3h per week).

PROFILE
- Candidates must hold a PhD degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent), and have research experience in audio signal processing (as shown by publications in relevant international journals and conference proceedings).
- Additional research experience in microphone array processing, acoustic noise modeling and/or reverberation modeling is considered a strong asset.
- Experience with Matlab programming is required, and experience with other programming languages (C/C++/Python/...) is considered beneficial.
- Excellent proficiency in the English language is required, as well as good communication skills, both oral and written.

OFFER
- A high-level and exciting international research environment at one of Europe's top universities.
- An intensive collaboration with renowned academic research groups within and outside KU Leuven, and with an ambitious industrial partner.
- A competitive salary.
- The possibility to participate in local as well as international courses, workshops and conferences.
- A one-year position with the possibility of extension for a second year.
