Job Description

The Department of Signal Processing and Acoustics at the Aalto University School of Electrical Engineering (Helsinki Finland) is presently looking for two (2) Postdoctoral Researchers in the area of machine learning with applications to smart energy and IoT. The positions are financed by the Academy of Finland project “Robust Demand-End Optimization with Event-Triggered Situational Awareness”.

The expected duration of the position is two years but a contract is first made for one year, and the extension is subject to the advance of research. The task is to conduct research together with Prof. Stefan Werner and possibly guide other students associated with the project. Preference will be given to candidates who can work independently and have a strong potential to build competence in machine learning (adaptation and learning) in the following research areas:

1. Energy-efficient sensor networks in IoT or smart buildings/cities

2. Load forecasting and demand-side optimization

3. Big data and smart energy/connected cities

We search for candidates in all three research areas, and select those with the best qualifications and keen interests in this interdisciplinary task. The candidate is expected to be able to work independently, have a solid mathematical background and a PhD in statistical signal processing, applied mathematics, statistics or machine learning, electrical engineering, or related field. Good command in English language (spoken and written) is a prerequisite. An eligible candidate should have submitted the PhD thesis for assessment by the application deadline.

Salary and contract terms:

The expected starting salary is 3,500 €/month. The contract includes occupational health and social security benefits. The starting date is negotiable.
