Job Description

Post-doctoral positions in Statistical Signal Processing for Gravitational Wave Astronomy

Summary

The Gravitation group at AstroParticule & Cosmologie APC is seeking qualified individuals for post-doctoral appointments to work in the area of statistical signal processing and data science with application to gravitational-wave data.

Context

On September 14 2015, the two detectors of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory observed for the first time a gravitational-wave signal produced by a distant binary black-hole merger. This is a major discovery that opens a new era for astronomy that will develop during the coming years with new instruments such as Advanced Virgo joining the worldwide detector network. Gravitational-wave astronomy heavily relies on a range of data analysis techniques that we intend to develop.

The institute

APC is an institute funded by the French National Research Center CNRS and the University of Paris Diderot. The institute is located in Paris, France and it is devoted to astroparticle physics and cosmology. It is involved in many large experiments and observatories in those areas such as the Planck CMB mission, the LSST survey telescope, ESA Euclid survey mission, the KM3NeT neutrino telescope, the SVOM gamma-ray satellite, etc. The institute provides a friendly and lively place to work and a scientifically exciting and stimulating environment to conduct research in.

The position

The position is for one year, renewable by one more year. The candidate will be employed by CNRS and will obtain the status of postdoctoral researcher.

The candidate will participate in the analysis of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo data, and in the development of new methods based on wavelet graphs for the scientific exploitation of future gravitational wave detections.

The candidate will join the Virgo team, currently composed of three permanent researchers, two postdoctoral fellows and three PhD students. The candidate will join the lively world-wide community formed by the Virgo and LIGO Scientific Collaborations.

The position is funded by the French Agence Nationale de la Recherche ANR in the framework of a joint project with CentraleSupélec. The candidate will interact closely with the interdisplinary team of researchers associated with this project, including Aurelia Fraysse LSS and Stéphane Jaffard UPEC.
