Job Description

The research group KU Leuven ESAT-STADIUS is currently offering 1 or 2 postdoctoral positions (2 years with possibility for extension) within the framework of several interdisciplinary projects on smart patient monitoring using wearable sensor technology, in particular:

- Multimodal Signal Analysis for Unobtrusive Characterization of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). The ultimate goal of this project is to develop a reliable sleep platform that can be used in a home environment. The main objectives are twofold: (1) enable reliable OSA screening with unobtrusive measurements such as photoplethysmography (PPG), ballistocardiography (BCG), audio and their fusion, (2) Characterize OSA patients beyond existing markers for improved cardiovascular risk assessment and treatment guidance by analyzing the full polysomnography.

- Epileptic seizure detection algorithms for a wearable EEG+PPG device. The goal is to create a prototype of a wearable seizure detection system which can give epilepsy patients better control in their daily life. The system will offer real-time seizure detection to alert the patient and the caretaker. The objective is to offer personalized solutions and algorithms allowing adaptive and patient-specific detection starting from synchronized acquisitions of brain and cardiorespiratory activity.

- Personal monitoring & watch platform for cardiovascular risk screening. The research is focused on the arterial stiffness as a screening parameter, starting from pulse wave velocity measurements for long-term monitoring.

- Processing of gastric pressure sensor signals leading to a diagnostic tool for gastric motility. The aim is to develop the required decision support software to translate the pressure data into diagnostic information. Machine learning technologies need to be applied to preprocess raw data (removing all types of artefacts), extract features or recognize specific patterns and build classifiers that generate the decision support tool.

The research projects are conducted in strong collaboration with the University Hospital Leuven, industrial partners and other academic partners within Flanders and abroad.
